Who we are
Matt started in law enforcement as an Anchorage Police Department (Alaska) Reserve officer in 1987. He went onto full time employment with APD in 1990. Matt worked in various positions within the Anchorage Police Department from Field Training Officer, Uniformed Crime Scene Investigator, Community Policing Team, Bike, and Foot patrol. Matt was a member of the SWAT team for over 17 years, rising to the role as a team supervisor.
Matt has extensive experience as a police instructor, beginning in 1997. He has taught use of force, de-escalation, duty to intervene, firearms, SWAT tactics, less lethal weapons, and more. Matt has developed, updated, and taught numerous law enforcement related topics. He retired from the Anchorage Police Department as the Police Academy and In-Service Training Supervisor.
Matt retired from APD to assume a Regional Training Coordinator role with the Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Division (POST) of the Idaho State Police. Matt continued his role in curriculum development and instruction as well as assessing training programs and instructors. Matt developed, updated, and instructed use of force, firearms, de-escalation, and duty to intervene with the Idaho POST Basic Patrol Academy and through the Idaho POST Firearms Instructor courses. He was the Statewide Firearms Coordinator for POST from 2016-2024.
In 2022, Matt began work assisting attorneys with criminal and civil case work as a use of force and police practices expert. He continues to teach law enforcement courses around the country. Additionally he is an adjunct instructor for the College of Eastern Idaho and Idaho State University law enforcement programs.
Matt retired from Idaho POST in January 2025 to focus on his training and consulting work.
Matt’s education includes a Masters Degree in Human Resource Development, Bachelors of Science in Occupational Education and Criminal Justice, and an Associates of Science with a Law Enforcement Specialization. Matt is also a Nationally Certified Instructor through the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training.
Matt has been accepted as a use of force and police practices expert in Alaska and Virginia State Courts. In addition he has provided expert consulting in administrative employment actions, state criminal, and Federal civil cases.
As his logo indicates, Matt continues to develop his knowledge (scientia), skills (artes), and abilities (facultas) through continuing experience, education, and training.
